JUVÉDERM®
What is JUVÉDERM®?
JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is one of the newest dermafillers available. It corrects facial wrinkles caused by natural aging and environmental damage and is used most often to smooth naso-labial folds, also called "parentheses," around the mouth. It can also be a good choice for lip augmentation and for filling hollows and scars on the face.
Manufactured by the same company that created Botox® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM is a smooth, clear gel and looks and feels natural when injected. It was approved by the FDA in 2006 to treat moderate to severe naso-labial folds. Many people choose to enhance the results of their face lift in Denver by using JUVÉDERM treatments around their mouth, cheeks or chin. You can learn all about your facial cosmetic surgery options and see diagrams of how several procedures are performed when you visit our specialty site.
What is JUVÉDERM made of?
Like Restylane®, JUVÉDERM is made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid, a natural substance. It's injected under the skin where it provides both moisture and a renewed support structure under the surface. It's biocompatible and eventually is harmlessly absorbed by the body.
How is JUVÉDERM different from other hyaluronic acid-based products?
JUVÉDERM has a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid than other tissue fillers, and its active ingredient is described as extensively "cross-linked." This, according to the manufacturer, helps explain its long-lasting effects —reported to be six to nine months. It may also help explain why many patients don't require touch-up treatments soon after their initial injections.
What should patients know prior to treatment?
Since JUVÉDERM is not derived from animal sources, no pre-testing is required. You should, however, avoid aspirin and some other medications for a week to 10 days prior to treatment, as they can cause bruising and swelling at the injection site. If you occasionally get cold sores, it's possible the fine needle used for JUVÉDERM injections could cause a recurrence. Pre-treatment anti-viral medication may help avoid this from happening.
At your consultation, all precautions and risks will be thoroughly explained.
Is JUVÉDERM safe?
Yes, the product is safe. FDA approval for JUVÉDERM was based on clinical trials with almost 500 women followed for six months. Not only did the product prove to be safe and effective, the participants overwhelmingly preferred it to another collagen-based product they used.
There is almost no risk of allergic reaction or animal-based disease with JUVÉDERM. The most common side effects are injection site redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness, dissipating usually in just a few days.
How long does JUVÉDERM® last?
The filler lasts six to nine months for most patients.
How is JUVÉDERM different from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles by blocking nerve transmission. As a cosmetic filler, JUVÉDERM treats wrinkles caused by the natural aging process and environmental damage by filling the area underneath them and supporting the skin to lie flat once again. At Rejuvenate!, our professional staff will help you understand which treatment is best for your individual needs.
How is JUVÉDERM different from bovine collagen?
Bovine collagen, derived from cows, requires allergy testing before treatment. Because it is non-animal based, JUVÉDERM carries no risk of allergic reaction and requires no pre-testing and waiting. Its effects are also longer-lasting than collagen injections.
How much do JUVÉDERM treatments cost?
At Rejuvenate!, we customize our procedures based on your personal needs, therefore cost varies from patient to patient. Because JUVÉDERM lasts several months it can be very cost effective. The best way to understand the costs and benefits of all your options is to come in for an appointment with us.
